Golden Jellyfish

Facts

• Up to 24 million Golden jellyfish of Jellyfish Lake undergo a 1–km long daily migration, swimming to the east of the Lake in the morning and to the west in the afternoon, in order to, among other things, avoid capture by the predatory sea anemone Entacmaea medusivora.

• Other marine lakes in Palau contain other subspecies of jellyfish with their own unique migration patterns.

• Jellyfish Lake is vulnerable climate change. That was proved in 1998, when during a “La Nina” warming period, part of the reproductive cycle of Golden Jellyfish was impeded. The system eventually recovered after the lake cooled.
