The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's "Bird-Friendly" certification guarantees that a minimum of 40 percent of coffee berries have been grown under rain forest canopy. The program is designed to provide a safe and healthy habitat for birds, and attracting them allows farmers to cut back on pesticide use, since birds eat insects that damage a coffee crop.
